Great Southern Land: touring Australian artists into the great unknown!

September 14, 2017 / no comments

This October, the second installment of our Great Southern Land tour continues. A new
concept developed by Bedroom Suck Records and our good mates The Adventure
Handbook, the GSL initiative aims at touring bands from metropolitan artists into the further
flung regional corners of Australia.

After a hugely successful first round in June this year that saw Melbourne slackers Good
Morning undertake a circuit around the isle of Tasmania, including a stop at Dark Mofo
festival, we are now turning our eyes to home sweet home, beautiful Victoria.
Expanding scope from the initial Tasmanian trip, this leg undertakes 11 dates, with 10 in
regional Victoria and a brief stop in SA’s captial, Adelaide. Regional centres visited on
this trip will include Daylesford, Ballarat, Beechworth, Warrnambool, Portland,
Kyneton, Castlemaine, Belgrave, Echuca and of course a stop in sunny Melbourne.

This trip, we are joined by two of Melbourne’s favourties, Dag and Ciggie Witch. Both
playing catchy pop tunes with memorable lyrics and a uniquely independent bent, these
bands are perfect to charm crowds across the state. See below for more info.

Great Southern Land is an independent initiative aimed at developing viable touring circuits
for independent Australian artists. By continually hosting events in regional centres, we
hope to encourage others to do the same and to help build healthy arts communities.

Great Southern Land is supported through the Creative Victoria Music Works funding program.

Bedroom Suck & Milk! Records present: Split Singles Club!

March 2, 2017 / no comments

All the best things come in pairs: spaghetti and meatballs, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, and now Bedroom Suck and Milk! Records. Motivated by friendship, music and a contagious need to share the combination of those two things with the world, the independent Australian record labels are teaming up for the first time and sending the results directly to your mailbox.

Split Singles Club is a limited-edition collection of 7-inch vinyl, each pairing a track from one of Milk!’s favourite Australian artists on one side, with one of Bedroom Suck’s on the other. The idea – spearheaded by Bedroom Suck director Joe Alexander and Milk! co-founder Jen Cloher – was born out of the close familial dynamic each label has with their artists and their local communities. “We wanted to develop a project that encapsulated this family idea and also extended a hand to others,” Joe says. A significant motivating factor in the project, Jen adds, is highlighting the uniquely generous spirit of Melbourne’s music scene, one that’s earning a growing awareness around the world: “I think Split Singles Club is a great reflection of how uncompetitive and collaborative we are in this town.”

The inclusive local labels are a package deal, and so are the records in this series; over the course of three months, subscribers will receive a total of six 7-inches in the mail, along with accompanying digital downloads. By May, there will be songs from 12 of these beloved local labels’ favourite artists spinning on turntables around the world. And there’s no splitting these singles – when you subscribe, you receive the lot. Like milk and cookies or Milk! and Bedroom Suck, you can’t have one without the other.

Artists include Courtney Barnett, Blank Realm, Dag, Lehmann B. Smith (of Totally Mild fame), Hachiku, Primo! + more.

You can learn more about the club here.

Pre-order Dag’s ‘Benefits of Solitude’ and get a free ticket to a show near you!

February 21, 2017 / no comments

The debut long-player from Dag is just one week away, landing in stores on Friday, Feb 24! To celebrate, we’ve got something for you — order your copy of the album between February 20 – 24, and you’ll also receive a ticket to one of their upcoming album shows in a city near you.

That’s right – whether it be Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane or Hobart — order your LP this week and we’ll shout you a ticket to the launch show in your town. *** Unfortunately we won’t be able to do this with the shows in Geelong and Sydney.

Tour dates:

24.02 The Curtin, Melbourne

10.03 The Metro, Adelaide

25.03 Barwon Club, Geelong

31.03 The Empire, Brisbane

02.04 The Haunt, Brisbane

22.04 The Grand Poobah, Hobart

Milk! Records and Bedroom Suck announce 7″ Singles Club!

February 14, 2017 / no comments

A significant motivating factor in the project, Jen adds, is highlighting the uniquely generous spirit of Melbourne’s music scene, one that’s earning a growing awareness around the world: “I think Split Singles Club is a great reflection of how uncompetitive and collaborative we are in this town.

And there’s no splitting these singles – when you subscribe, you receive the lot. Like milk and cookies or Milk! and Bedroom Suck, you can’t have one without the other.

The collaboration became a space for Milk! and Bedroom Suck to draw attention to artists they love, but whose work they don’t have the time or resources to release. “One of the greatest frustrations of running a small label in Melbourne is that there are so many incredible bands and artists,” Jen says, “If we could, Milk! would be releasing a new record every week. Split Singles Club was a fun and relatively cost-effective way to show off some of the bands we love that people may not have heard before.

While some of the featured names on the Split Singles Club roster will be familiar – there’s Milk! co-founder Courtney Barnett and labelmates Jade Imagine, plus Bedroom Suck artists Blank Realm and Dag – the others have been hand-picked from across Australia to join this tight-knit family of compulsive collaborators. LA Mood, Hachiku, Primo!, Treehouse, Emlyn Johnson, Cable Ties, The Maraby Band and Lehmann B. Smith complete the line-up. “The purpose is not to have a ‘greatest hits’ from each label,” Joe explains, “but to expose a set of new, exciting and totally worthwhile artists to a larger audience.

In addition to the selection of stunning tracks, the Split Singles Club is accompanied by 6 original artworks by local illustrator Steph Hughes, and 6 short film teasers by Hayden Somerville. Music, art and film; a match made in heaven.

From Valentine’s Day (that’s Tuesday, 14 February, in case you haven’t made that dinner reservation yet), punters can purchase a subscription to receive all six 7-inches between March and May 2017. Don’t stress if you miss out on that limited edition batch though – there are unlimited digital download-only options.

To subscribe, head to the Split Singles Club webstore now before places run out!

Bedroom Plucks w/ Lower Plenty

October 27, 2016 / no comments

Life can get pretty flat out sometimes, and keeping up to date with all the latest gigs and upcoming shows can be a time consuming task. That’s why we’ve decided to make things a little bit more accessible.

Bedroom Plucks is our semi regular update of new music and local gigs that we want to share with you. Because we love to see all of our friends out at shows, and we wouldn’t want you to miss out either!

This week our plucks have been curated by Melbourne locals Lower Plenty, who have just dropped the first single from their forthcoming LP, Sister Sister

Check it out here!

Lower Plenty are back!

October 25, 2016 / no comments

Melbourne is an incestuous town. Bands share members, record in home-made studios, and play to packed venues and backyards alike. Lower Plenty meet rarely, in the downtime between tours or jobs, write and record on the spot, and call it quits for another year.

The upcoming album Sister Sister – the band’s fourth – was recorded in a kitchen in Collingwood. It was freezing cold and grey outside, the band rugged up against another Melbourne winter, seated in a circle, each exploring a musical idea of another, imbuing the record with a quality of restlessness and shared warmth.

Listen to the first single, ‘Bondi’s Dead’ here.

Sister Sister LP out 18th November 2016 via Bedroom Suck / Omnian Music Group

We’re pleased as punch to today announce the newest induction into the ever growing Bedroom Suck family.. Dag!

Head over to Indie30 to listen to and read more about debut single ‘Staying Up at Night’ and their forthcoming LP due out Feb 24 via Bedroom Suck.

“All Four Seasons” is the second single from the sophomore record by trans-continental pop group ‘Free Time’. The current Australian lineup of the band includes members of Twerps, Totally Mild and Terrible Truths.

Watch: Free Time “Who Owns the Moon?”

February 18, 2016 / no comments

Inspired by classic Aussie film clips from the likes of The Reels and Models, Free Time’s new clip for “Who Owns The Moon” originally took shape as a synopsis for a film never intended to be made. Nania uses the song to explore a forbidden love interest between a NYC doorman and his rich clientele, an idea which took shape when he himself spent a year walking dogs for the wealthy on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
You can read more thanks to Nania’s interview with Impose Magazine here.
Free Time will release two more singles in the first half of this year, before finally dropping their sophomore LP on April 22. Recorded partly with Jarvis Tavaniere (Woods, Real Estate) in NYC, and partly with John Lee (Lost Animal, Beaches) in Melbourne, it is truly a record for the transcontinental.

You Beauty release new pub rock opera!

December 3, 2015 / no comments

After shocking us with last year’s story of the washed up Rugby League star and the incredible live show to match, You Beauty have brought us their second pub-rock opera, a likely story about an online romance scammer who falls in love with his prey.

If anyone, this band know how to take their audience on a journey through the suburban Australian heart. Skipping between dodgy eHarmony profiles, A Current Affair exposés and conjugal Jayco visits as easily as the tunes move from shimmery pop to 90′s fist pumpers and touching ballads, Illywhacka is part hairbrush sing along, part audio book and part extended dissertation on where humanity lives in the post-internet world.

To ensure the all-important singalong at their incredible live shows, the band have included 3000 words of lyrical content on the back of this beautiful vinyl packaging. This release sees the first in a new Sydney/Melbourne collaboration between Rice is Nice and BSR, aimed at encouraging kids off the sofa and onto the dancefloor.

Pre-order here. Orders will ship after January 16.

Watch: Terrible Truths – See Straight

September 17, 2015 / no comments

Off the back of teaser track ‘The Coast Is Clear’ a couple of weeks back, we now have something else to keep you excited about the forthcoming Terrible Truths debut.

Directed by Helena Papageorgiou, the video for ‘See Straight’ is two-and-a-half minutes of psychedelic scrap book wonder that fits perfectly with the angular pulsing rhythms of this track.

Terrible Truths ‘s/’t debut available on LP/CD/download Oct 9th, 2015.

Listen: Blank Realm ‘River of Longing’

July 1, 2015 / no comments

‘River of Longing’ is the first single from the forthcoming Blank Realm record, ‘Illegals in Heaven’. On first listen, you are instantly reminded of why this band and their releases have made such an impact, not just in Australia but overseas. Few bands nail jilted pop like they do.
You can stream ‘River of Longing’ below or see what Pitchfork had to say here.

Circular Keys – Sorry! Out Now

July 1, 2015 / no comments

Sorry! the debut full length of enigmatic duo Circular  Keys is a vicious record, a stark contrast of over-processed and abrasive electronics, juxtaposed against angelic vocals. The results can be startling, and yet throughout the entire journey, colliding elements will rapidly transform into a few minutes of pure ecstasy and pop bliss.  Crystal clear melodies ring over electronically crafted rhythm and continually spiralling echoes, cutting straight through the mire to shine like a beacon.
You can stream ‘Baby (Lite)’ below.  Album available on LP or for Download  now.

Listen: Terrible Truths Teaser Track – The Coast Is Clear

July 1, 2015 / no comments

Terrible Truths fresh and spirited approach to music making stands out amongst their contemporaries, harking back to the almost naïve energy and enthusiasm of early DIY punk and hardcore. Their debut LP Terrible Truths sees the intertwined vocals of guitarist Rani Rose and bassist Stacey Wilson evoke feelings of freedom and discovery; melodies soar in triumphant succession before descending into dark patterns of gloom and goth. Stream the teaser ‘Track ‘The Coast Is Clear’ here. Full album will be available on LP/CD/Download Oct 9th, 2015.

Watch: Primitive Motion ‘Same in the Same’

May 26, 2015 / no comments

“Brisbane artists Sandra Selig and Leighton Craig have been collaborating since 2003, when Craig began creating soundtracks for Selig’s art installations. They’ve since played together in a number of experimental outfits, including Deadnotes and Fig., making music based around improvisations and delighfully arcane instrumentation. (Over the years, the liner notes to Primitive Motion records have listed contraptions ranging from the stylophone to euphonium and flugelhorn).

‘Same in the Same’ is the latest single, and one of the loveliest moments, from Craig and Selig’s second LP as Primitive Motion, Pulsating Time Fibre. Taken from the record’s fleeting A-side – the pop half of this gorgeous and eccentric collection – the track clocks in at a succinct 1 minute and 14 seconds. Like most Primitive Motion songs, ‘Same in the Same’ exhibits the playful DIY impulses of early post-punk, circa the Raincoats or Young Marble Giants, as well as the lush expansiveness of electronic pioneers like Laurie Spiegel.

‘The Same in the Same’ is accompanied by a video directed by Selig herself, a woozy meditation on the play of movement and light.” Annie Toller, Who the Hell

Primitive motion launch ‘Pulsating Time Fibre’ Saturday July 18th at the Skukum Lounge in Brisbane.

Tickets to the bands Brisbane album launch are limited to 50 so get in quick if you are keen to head along. Buy tickets here!

Watch: Superstar ‘Folding Gold’

May 26, 2015 / no comments

Superstar are an enigma in the Australian music scene. They have been distilling their sound for almost a decade, refining their approach to music and critiquing their processes the way they would a fine wine, something the band are famously akin to.

‘Folding Gold’ demonstrates this as well as any other track from their beautiful sophomore record and the video’s slow motion soft focus imagery fits perfectly.

May 12, 2015 / no comments

After selling out their Melbourne album launch Totally Mild are ready to hit the road and bring their perfect pop to the rest of Australia. Fronted by Elizabeth Mitchell, a woman with an exciting tendency to sing in a falsetto not many can match, the band perform absolutely perfect, skewed, disjointed pop music that sounds as though it was handed down from the heavens.
Catch them as they tour their debut full length Down Time all up the coast. Casual Glory.

Primitive Motion – Pulsating Time Fibre, out this week

March 24, 2015 / no comments

Primitive Motion – Golden Light Clinic from BSR on Vimeo.

‘Pulsating Time Fibre’ is out this week and to coincide with it’s release the band will also be unveiling three separate videos into the world. The first of which is for the amazing ‘Golden Light Clinic’.

The clip, conceived by bassist-vocalist (and visual artist) Sandra Selig, drifts in and out of focus, compounding the dream-like minimalist pop exhibited within the track. Kaleidoscopic colours soak up layered exposures, Selig and bandmate Leighton Craig shifting in and out of frame throughout.

On Tour: Love Of Diagrams

March 17, 2015 / no comments

Since 2001 Love of Diagrams have turned the Australian music scene on it’s head, setting the precedent for a new brand of inventive, flexible, and inquisitive music, overstepping the worn path of ‘usual’ rock and roll.

2015 sees the arrival of Blast. Put together over the past 5 years, it saw the band record with Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago. Blast is a raw and sonic onslaught in true Diagrams fashion, twisting and turning, before tumbling into a labyrinth of beautiful, soaring guitar tone and rich, grooving bass.  To support the new album the band are going on tour. You can catch them as they traverse the east coast here:

5 Years of Bedroom Suck Records!

November 8, 2014 / no comments

Bedroom Suck Records began as the present tense of Joe Alexander and Sam McCabe, two down-and-out sharehouse types direct from the steamy sauna of Brisbane suburban living. One day the amount of good music snaking out from under the doors of friends and distant relatives became too much to bear, and in early 2009 what became known as ‘bedroom suck’ was born.

Since then, B-S-R have been honoured to dip their hands into hot vinyl to manufacture records for the likes of Boomgates, Blank Realm, Bitch Prefect, Terrible Truths + more. This year, we will celebrate our fifth birthday, with celebrations in some of our favourite venues across the country.

Our birthday celebration this year will also include the release of a double-LP vinyl compilation, brilliantly titled ‘5 Years of Bedroom Suck Records’ and charting the label’s inception in Brisbane and growth throughout the past half-decade, including previously unreleased tracks from Love of Diagrams, Boomgates, Angel Eyes, Terrible Truths, Ela Stiles, Peter Escott + more.

Join us in celebration:

On Tour: Ela Stiles

May 17, 2014 / no comments

Over the years, Ela Stiles has built a name for herself as an adept musician in Sydney’s often strange and varied music scene. Moving beyond her work in local favourites Songs, she became a driving force in Melbourne outfit Bushwalking, releasing two records with the band while still based in Sydney and working on numerous projects.

Now she has released her debut record, an enigma made up entirely of a-capella pieces, layered and squished together to form a beautiful whole. Join her to celebrate the release of this special record.

Premiere: Ela Stiles ‘Kumbh Mela’

May 11, 2014 / no comments

Long-time Australian musician and enigmatic composer Ela Stiles has just released the first taste of her forthcoming debut solo record. The track, titled ‘Kumbh Mela’, has been given the royal treatment by fellow musician and member of Bitch Prefect, Pat Telfer.

A beautifully shot and haunting video, this is the perfect teaser for her upcoming debut, an album recorded entirely a-capella, with no instrumentation or accompaniments. View the full post here.

Premiere: Martyr Privates ‘Something to Sell’

May 11, 2014 / no comments

Brisbane rock mega-stars Martyr Privates have previewed another track from their forthcoming LP this week. Big Star and Spacemen 3 immediately come to mind when discussing this and, and ain’t nothing wrong with that. Drop Chilton & Co. into the contemporary Australian underground and I’m sure they’d come up with something not quite as strangely striking as this material. Their debut LP is self-titled and will be available later this year. Read the full article here.
